President Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs Over Digital Services Taxes
Today, June 26, President Trump posted a sweeping tariff threat on social media targeting any country that imposes a Digital Services Tax (DST) on American companies. His post read: “Numerous European Countries have been discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax on American Companies. Some of these Countries are close to actually doing this. Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America.”The threat is directed primarily at European nations, though Trump framed it as a global warning. The timing is notable, as it comes just days ahead of Trump’s July 4 deadline for the EU and the U.S. to begin implementing the trade agreement finalized in May 2026, which caps tariffs on most EU exports at 15%. Digital services taxes were not covered under that deal and have remained a persistent point of friction between Washington and Brussels.  While we do not expect to see implementation of 100% tariffs on any country it is important to be aware of the issue. The reality is that the dramatic threats are tempered by the reality of the devastating impact of such action.
